One of Vernon Corea’s closest friends was Oliver Perera who founded Metropolitan Advertising Co Ltd in Sri Lanka. Oliver Perea was a pioneer in the field of advertising in Sri Lanka – the company celebrated 50 years in advertising.He started Metropolitan Advertising Co Ltd in 1956 – he was one of the youngest Managing-Directors of an advertising company – he was 23 years of age. Oliver was an old boy of S.Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia and a former Chairman of the Lions Club.
Oliver struck up a friendship with Vernon in the early 1960s and he used to visit Vernon and his family in his Fiat car, when they lived in Templar’s Road in Mount Lavinia. They were very close friends and Oliver was a frequent visitor to Vernon’s home in Maha Nuge Gardens in Kollupitiya. Oliver also owned a Bata shoe shop in Bambalapitiya.
R. Oliver Perera passed away in Colombo in 2008. Oliver attended a Memorial Service for Vernon Corea held at St.Luke’s Church in Borella in November 2002 and recalled the good old days with Vernon in the 1960s – the golden era of Radio Ceylon, the oldest radio station in South Asia.
He was a former President and founder member of the Association of Accredited Advertising Agencies of Sri Lanka.
