Vernon Corea was appointed to the senior management of the British Broadcasting Corporation in the 1980s, he was the first ever Asian to be appointed onto the wider management team. Vernon Corea was the BBC’s first ever Ethnic Minorities Advisor.
He met His Royal Highness Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales in his capacity as the BBC’s Ethnic Minorities Advisor in the 1980s – the meeting took place in Buckingham Palace. At the time Vernon was also presenting the hugely popular ‘London Sounds Eastern,’ on BBC Radio London 206. It was one of THE most popular radio programmes on BBC Local Radio. ‘London Sounds Eastern’ had a cult following and introduced Asian music to a whole new audience in the capital.
The Prince of Wales has always been interested in all things Asian. One of Vernon Corea’s prized photographs was a picture of Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales seated cross legged on the floor playing a tabla – with a group of Asian tabla players in the United Kingdom.
Vernon featured tabla music on BBC Radio London’s ‘London Sounds Eastern,’ radio programme.
