Vernon Corea was a man with a sense of humour. He cracked jokes, was able to laugh at himself and enjoyed comedy. Vernon was a fan of the Portsmouth born British actor Peter Sellers. Throughout the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s films featuring Peter Sellers arrived in Ceylon, now Sri Lanka. He was very popular on the island. Peter Sellers also found fame through The Goon Show with Spike Milligan and Harry Secombe – it was a laugh a minute with the three of them.
Vernon took his family to see several Peter Sellers films when they were screened in Colombo, including ‘The Party’ and ‘The Millionairess.’ Vernon also played the hit ‘Goodness Gracious Me,’ sung by Peter Sellers and Sophia Loren from the film ‘The Millionairess,’ on his radio shows over the airwaves of Radio Ceylon in the 1960s.
