Nelson Mandela passes away aged 95

Nelson Mandela, former President of South Africa has passed away aged 95. He was an inspirational leader and a great figure of reconciliation and forgiveness. He helped shape the destiny of South Africa and brought people together. Nelson Mandela was a humble man and a great son of South Africa.

Throughout the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s Radio Ceylon now the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation, followed the life of Nelson Mandela and he was very much in the news – he was one of Vernon Corea’s heroes when he worked at the station. Mandela dismantled the apartheid regime in South Africa and brought peace to that nation.

Andrew Young, one of the leading figures of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States and America’s Ambassador to the United Nations said on BBC TV News that it was ‘one of the finest hours of the Commonwealth,’ when Commonwealth leaders such as Michael Manley of Jamaica, the Prime Minister of Australia and others were negotiating the release of Nelson Mandela.
