Released in 1964 the powerful film on the life of Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury, was shown in cinemas across Sri Lanka then known as Ceylon. Vernon Corea took his family to see the film in Colombo. ‘Becket’ is a compelling and gripping film on the life of the man played by British actor Richard Burton – Thomas Becket was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1162 to 1170 in England. Becket was slain in front of the altar at Canterbury Cathedral by four knights who believed the King wanted him dead.

Peter O’Toole and Richard Burton are at their finest as King Henry II and the King’s Saxon protégé. Vernon Corea did find the film really gripping.
