Nimal Mendis with the Kandyans in the 1950s. Broadcaster Vernon Corea helped to make Nimal a houseld name in Sri Lanka by playing all his records on his radio programmes on Radio Ceylon in the 1950s and 1960s.
The legendary Sri Lankan musician Nimal Mendis paid a tribute to his friend Vernon Corea at the 10th Death Anniversary of Vernon’s held at St. Paul’s Church in Milagririya in September 2012. In the 1950s Vernon played all of Nimal’s records on his radio programmes over the airwaves of Radio Ceylon in South Asia. It helped to catapult Nimal Mendis into a household name in Sri Lanka, his songs were heard right across South Asia.
Nimal Mendis passed away in Colombo Sri Lanka in April 2015.
Nimal Mendis visited Vernon Corea and his family when they were living at 5 Maha Nuge Gardens in Colombo in the 1960s and 1970s.
